Eye-opening essay tying in what's happening today to ideologies and practices that have been around for a long time (e.g. re: hysteria). I particularly like how you point out that empathy has become a sign of deficiency or even mental illness in some sectors of American society. When I worked with criminalized women I noticed they consistently were told by caseworkers and therapists to "put yourself first" and "your problem is that you keep trying to take care of other people." The women themselves are well aware that (1)strong connections with other people is the only real safety new, and (2)self-esteem lies with being a caring and generous person.
Eight years ago after the Nazis rallied in Charlottesville VA and James Field murdered Heather Heyer by driving his car into an anti racist protest, I stumbled onto an online forum of misogynists claiming that she was a useless (no children) female who deserved it. That was the rally Rump claimed included "very fine people on both sides"
The ones saying the hateful things are projecting. Nick Fuentes, for instance, is a sociopath trying to advance the values of sociopathy. Sadly, he has a lot of company, but not the majority. People like him need to be brought to heel by the rest of us, the majority that exist in a society that values itself, human beings, and life itself.
Thank you for reporting this. I'm with you, a happy, "married with Kids" educated Liberal Woman. One of the really AWFL ones, except I've chosen poverty over affluence just to be master of my own life.
Also this scares the shit out of me. It is the most horrible thing ever to be locked up in a psych ward. I know because they locked me up when I was 7 months pregnant. I went there to get treatment for being suicidal because I was off my dangerous meds and getting ZERO support at the time. They kept me there involuntary for TEN Days (the maximum without further paperwork). It was the longest ten days of my life. Imagine if I had other kids and they got left with my neglectful partner at the time. Horror. Everyone there was nice to me, they even gave me Almond milk. But I've never been detained against my will before. And it was horrible not to be able to go outside, never to have a private conversation, always the bright lights and nightly "safety checks".
Beautiful writing, 100 percent agree! Watch Hitlers Handmaids on YouTube. Authoritarians initially need women to succeed, but then oppress them. This documentary has fascinating parallels to our administration. We’re in the early stages! Wake up America!
Even anxiety was blamed on women's "hysteria" as Sigmund Freud blamed their "bad thoughts" when in reality they were being electrocuted at this precise moment in time with the rise of the telegraph. Anxiety had the same symptoms as a neurological disease called neurasthenia, which is when the electrical nature of our nerves is disturbed.
"The common cures for hysteria? More sex with their husband, pregnancy, childbirth and rest."
Don't forget the vibrator! Until they sought to ban that because women seemed to (heaven forbid!) enjoy it a bit too much for the comfort of the patriarchy, that is
Indeed, and that was horrible. FGM was actually a thing in the West back then at least to some extent, even somewhat up until the 1960s apparently, as much as people in the West often prefer to memory-hole it now.
I guess I’m an AWFL too and always have been. Huh, who knew. Also married, very active in my church, so there you go. I don’t intend to be anything else, least of all to get the approval of these twerps.

Spot on.
Beautiful writing, 100 percent agree! Watch Hitlers Handmaids on YouTube. Authoritarians initially need women to succeed, but then oppress them. This documentary has fascinating parallels to our administration. We’re in the early stages! Wake up America!
The first time my eyes really opened to what women go through was when I read “The Gift of Fear” by Gavin De Becker. It changed me.
This article is a brilliant analysis that opens my eyes yet again. This is why I am a paid subscriber.
AMEN to that! Well said. 💯
Indeed, as the saying goes, obedient, well-behaved women rarely make history.
And what IS truly toxic and malignant narcissistic is this vile, misogynistic, reich-wing backlash against women.
Even anxiety was blamed on women's "hysteria" as Sigmund Freud blamed their "bad thoughts" when in reality they were being electrocuted at this precise moment in time with the rise of the telegraph. There was also the cliteridectomy.
Indeed, and that was horrible. FGM was actually a thing in the West back then at least to some extent, even somewhat up until the 1960s apparently, as much as people in the West often prefer to memory-hole it now.
Great article, thanks
Thank you for the BOOST on Monday morning. I can take a deep breath and keep moving toward liberation.
