IT HAPPENED AGAIN
It began with the sound of tires crunching gravel and a scream no one answered.
Saturday, May 4, 2025. A quiet morning in Oxnard, California. A father pulled into a gas station with his children in tow. He likely planned to grab a drink or fill up before starting the day. He didn’t know six unmarked vehicles were watching him. He didn’t know that, in the land of the free, this would be his last moment of freedom.
ICE agents descended like a SWAT team. No warning. No explanation. No concern for the small faces peering from the backseat.
They took the father and they left the children behind.
A Pattern, Not a Mistake
This wasn’t an accident. It wasn’t a one-off.
It was a process. A workflow. A procedure so common that when I saw the headlines, I didn’t ask “How could this happen?” I asked “How many this time?”
Just recently in Nashville, Tennessee, dozens of parents were pulled from their vehicles during traffic stops and immigration sweeps. Children were left inside running cars. Some too young to unbuckle themselves. Some waiting at schools, unaware no one was coming. Some never saw their parents again.
This is what ICE is doing now. Not knocking on doors. Not showing up with paperwork. Just surrounding cars, removing the adult, and driving off.
It is targeted. It is strategic.
And it leaves children stranded in the most literal, horrifying way possible.
Strapped In and Abandoned
The arrest in Oxnard came and went in minutes.
Gas station attendant Juan Conches watched as six government vehicles surrounded the truck and removed the man. He stood by helplessly as the children, one a 19-year-old who couldn’t drive, the other much younger… sat alone in the vehicle, confused and powerless.
Who do you call when it’s the government doing the abandoning?
Is This Legal?
Let’s not mince words. This is child endangerment.
Any other person who leaves a child alone in a vehicle at a gas station faces arrest, charges, and a headline. But when it’s a federal agency, it becomes collateral damage.
ICE didn’t call child services. They didn’t wait for a relative.
They didn’t so much as make a phone call before vanishing down the highway with a father in shackles and his children in the rearview mirror. What happened that morning in Oxnard, like what happened in Nashville and what is now happening across Central and Southern California, is not a loophole. It is a policy.
They don’t see children. They see leverage.
“Public Safety” Is a Lie
ICE and its defenders claim these arrests make us safer. But how?
What threat was neutralized when a working father was pulled from a gas station parking lot and vanished into a system that rarely offers answers or justice?
What kind of safety leaves toddlers screaming in the backseat of a still-running vehicle? Let’s say it plainly. This isn’t about safety. This is about spectacle. This is about fear. This is about showing up in broad daylight, taking people in front of their children, and daring the world to watch.
The Children Remember
Ask anyone who’s seen it happen. The trauma doesn’t fade.
A child watches their parent dragged away and left behind by uniformed agents. That image doesn’t go away.
It becomes the night terror. The panic attack. The quiet breakdown years later in a high school hallway when they can’t focus because the sound of police sirens sends them spiraling.
Some of these kids are citizens.
All of them are victims.
None of them are protected.
A System Without a Conscience
ICE is no longer just enforcing immigration law. It is operating as a rogue force without accountability, without oversight, and without a shred of humanity.
It has smashed car windows to extract fathers.
It has arrested people at gas stations, at schools, at appointments with immigration officers themselves.
Now it leaves children in cars.
This is the new normal. This is what they call workflow.
Where’s the Line?
The question isn’t how did this happen.
The question is how many more times will it happen before we as Americans stand collectively and do something.
Because if this were your child, your neighbor’s child, your coworker’s child, would you call it enforcement?
Or would you call it what it is: state-sanctioned child abandonment.
The Closing Doors of Justice
In a country that claims to value family, ICE rips them apart.
In a country that claims to uphold due process, ICE bypasses courts with speed and silence.
In a country that claims to protect the innocent, ICE walks past car seats without blinking.
What is this if not a modern Gestapo? What else do you call a government agency that detains people without charge, transports them without notice, and separates families with zero recourse?
You think this isn’t your fight?
Their children are waiting up for a call that will never come.
And unless we speak now, ours could be next.
What Can We Do?
On June 14, Flag Day, Donald Trump wants tanks in the streets and a birthday parade broadcast to show strength, but real power doesn’t come from spectacle or fear; it rises from the people who refuse to let children be left crying in backseats while their parents are disappeared.
Call your representatives, join the growing resistance at www.generalstrikeus.com, learn about the Flag Day protests at www.nokings.org, and use mobilize.us to find actions near you… because if we don’t fight this now, we become the silence that lets it continue.
Call you representatives. Demand a federal investigation into ICE’s operations in California and Tennessee. Demand child welfare protections. Demand accountability. Make sure your tax dollars aren’t paying for family separation in your own community. You can find them here.
I won’t stop telling these stories.
Because the mainstream media may look away, but I won’t. Because ICE wants silence, but I’ll shout. Because families are being destroyed in real time, and we can’t afford to pretend we didn’t know.
