ICE is and has always been nothing but a fascist group of storm troopers. They're a bunch of bullies with badges and that's why they work for ICE. I've known many LEOs and prison guards and 90% of them got b off on being able to bully people without repercussions. Especially the prison guards. Some of them would have been right at home at Auschwitz. I don't know what the solution is to our sick society short of deporting all the MAGAts to Russia so they can experience life in a real autocracy. Keep doing what you're doing. America needs writers like you.

Yesterday, our state senator and state representatives came to our town committee meeting, and spoke of the work they are doing to a) keep state and local police from in any way assisting ICE, and to make illegal any agreements some towns might already have with ICE, b) work with local organizations to form advocate groups that can be mobilized when ICE shows up, to work against the kidnappings, and c) to do all the legislature can do to mitigate the harm being done by the current regime. They are between a rock and a hard place: trying to keep us safe while not violating any (lawful) federal edicts. As I told my state senator: they need to treat the federal orders as the Marines in LA should have treated the order to deploy there: the UCMJ requires all officers and men to obey LAWFUL orders, and to disobey unlawful orders, and to know the difference. I am ashamed that the Marines in LA did not do that. We do not send Marines to police civilians.

Thank you so much for this outstanding article. This journalist scholarship is impeccable as always and it is evidence of the cruelty of this part of our government. To treat a sick person in this manner is nothing less than state sponsored murder and has to stop!!!!

I am Canadian. I am reading any/all of your articles Dissent. Some of them hit home in ways you cannot imagine. Because of where I live, I feel it’s not my place to put my thoughts on writing in your articles.

ICE is a classic example of an unreformable organization. Every future Democratic candidate for any federal office must call for:

1) the agency to be completely abolished;

2) for full prosecution of any who committed crimes (including murder, as is the case here);

3) changes in laws to protect the people from masked secret police in the future.

Or let’s just get rid of the US altogether at this point. Founded as a white male ethnostate 249 years ago, it appears to also be unreformable.

I also appreciate knowing that ICE has been getting away with these horrors for so long. I had no idea. Thanks for getting the word out.

I didn't know the cruelty of ICE 20 years ago. Thank you for connecting the dots.

Thank you for telling us about the horrors of past and present reality..because we cannot fight against what we do not know. 🙏🏽😌🕯

If I'm being honest I had never even heard of ICE until this year but I also live in a small town in WI. I'm sorry for Jazmine's loss and for what they are doing to all immigrants, legal or illegal. It's disgusting and needs to stop!

I was in Germany on business. I was having dinner with a business person who was 16 when he was taken by the Wehrmacht to fight. He said with regret, “ we didn’t know we could say no.” We must say “no.”

As far as ICE is concerned, the genie was let out of the bottle years ago. Cruelty was always considered an acceptable tool of the trade. Now with the ramping up of rapid mass hirings, I doubt there is even a pretext of appropriate/adequate training of recruits. My bet is that many receive “on the job” training. And who are their instructors and role models? The goons that are already imbedded in this unmanaged, brutish, and poorly trained rag tag group of federalized vigilantes.

ICE needs to be disbanded and destroyed - it can never be repaired and made right. We need to starve the beast of funding while either reallocating those funds to local or state police (some of which are also broken and in need of reform or total remake) or slowly building a lawful, well trained, ethical, professional (in attitude, dress - yes , uniforms; NO MASKS) organization in which employees are held to high ethical and legal standards. Concurrently, there must be clear and meaningful consequences for those who fail to meet or choose to ignore those standards, ultimately leading to dismissal and banning of the miscreant from any future position, at any level, in law enforcement.
